LISTEN: Pearl Jam Rock Hall of Fame Speech and Performance
The band also talks past and present drummers
When you think of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament’s fashion may be what comes to mind. (He donned a t-shirt that paid homage to musicians not inducted; Ament’s now infamous shirt lists everyone from Slayer and Alice in Chains to Steppenwolf and The Smashing Pumpkins.)

However, Pearl Jam’s speech—which included a hilarious story about Eddie Vedder smoking a bit too much and hearing David Letterman’s voice seemingly coming out of the TV—and performance are also worth talking about.
In fact, some of the artists on Ament’s shirt got specific shoutouts from the band in their acceptance speech, where they rattled off tons of names like Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Kinks (specifically “A Well Respected Man”), David Bowie, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Cheap Trick, The Beatles, The Ramones, Brandi Carlile, Sleater-Kinney, Social Distortion, Muddy Waters, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Iggy Pop, The Stooges, The Who, The Band, and Fugazi, among others. Whew!
Now that you know who these guys look up to, see if you can catch any of that inspiration in this clip of their Rock Hall induction performance of “Better Man” below!
Last, and certainly not least, Eddie Vedder gives credit to former drummers Dave Krusen, Dave Abbruzzese, and Jack Irons before sharing some special words for current Pearl Jam drummer, Matt Cameron. Hear a bit of this part of the speech below.
The entire ceremony airs Saturday, April 29 at 8:00 PM, exclusively on HBO.
